The autumn Lisbon Half Marathon route runs through the most modern Lisbon, the one born from the 1998 World Expo. It starts in Parque das Nações and follows the Tagus estuary beneath the towering Vasco da Gama Bridge.

It's the autumn alternative to the famous spring half, on a completely different course. This guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and how it differs from the 25 de Abril Bridge half.

Parque das Nações, 21st-century Lisbon

The start is in Parque das Nações, the cutting-edge district built for Expo '98. Contemporary architecture, wide riverside avenues and the Lisbon Oceanarium next door make this the most modern face of the city, a world away from the hills of the old town.

Beneath the Vasco da Gama Bridge

The route runs along the Tagus estuary, with the Vasco da Gama Bridge — the longest in Europe at over 12 kilometres — dominating the horizon. Running in its shadow, the river opening out toward the sea, is the image that defines this half marathon.

A flat, open course

Unlike historic Lisbon, full of hills, this area is flat and open. The route, mostly at river level, is fast and comfortable, ideal for anyone wanting a half marathon without elevation surprises in the heart of autumn.

How it differs from the spring half

Lisbon has two different half marathons. The spring race (March) starts on the 25 de Abril Bridge and finishes in Belém, in the west of the city. This autumn one is run in Parque das Nações, in the east, by the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Two different courses through two different Lisbons.
