The Seville Marathon route is among the best in Europe. Flat, fast and spectacular in equal measure: in 42 kilometres it passes the Guadalquivir, Triana, the Giralda, the Cathedral and María Luisa Park. Seville holds the Platinum label from World Athletics and is, alongside Valencia, one of the two best PB courses in Spain.

Whether you are running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what the elevation looks like and what you will find in each section.

The Guadalquivir and the Alamillo Bridge

The Seville Marathon crosses the Guadalquivir several times, each crossing offering a different view of the city. The Alamillo Bridge — with its leaning mast designed by Santiago Calatrava for Expo 92 — is one of the most photographed points on the course. Crossing it in the opening kilometres, with the river reflecting the February sky, is one of the moments runners remember longest.

Triana: Seville's most passionate neighbourhood

The course enters Triana, the quintessential Sevillian neighbourhood, with its colourful houses, azulejo tiles and its identity as the birthplace of flamenco. Triana crowds are known for being the loudest on the route. These are the kilometres where public support is most intense and where the city feels most authentic.

The Giralda and the Cathedral: historic heart of Seville

The course passes beside the Giralda and Seville Cathedral — the two most recognised monuments in Andalusia — in one of the most emotionally charged stretches of the race. Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic building in the world, and seeing it up close while running, with fresh legs and the crowd cheering, is what makes this marathon unique.

María Luisa Park and the return to the stadium

The second half of the course passes through the area of María Luisa Park and the Plaza de España, with its azulejo maps of all Spanish provinces. The final stretch back into the Olympic Stadium, finish line in sight, is the perfect close to a race that has crossed three centuries of Seville's history in 42 kilometres.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Seville Marathon go?

The Seville Marathon route takes in the city's most iconic neighbourhoods and monuments. It starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium in La Cartuja, crosses the Guadalquivir over the Alamillo Bridge, runs through the Triana neighbourhood, passes beside the Giralda and the Cathedral, skirts the Santa Cruz quarter and María Luisa Park, and circles back to the stadium. The course combines historic Seville with the modern skyline of La Cartuja island.

What is the elevation profile of the Seville Marathon?

The Seville Marathon profile is almost completely flat, with barely 100 metres of accumulated elevation gain. The near-total absence of hills, fast asphalt and cool February conditions (by Seville standards) make it one of the fastest marathon courses in Europe. Many runners specifically choose it as a PB attempt.

Where is the start and finish of the Seville Marathon?

Both the start and finish are inside the Olympic Stadium in La Cartuja. It is one of the very few European marathons that starts and finishes inside an Olympic venue, which creates a competition atmosphere at the moments that matter most in a race.

When is the Seville Marathon?

The Seville Marathon is held in February, typically mid-month. It holds the Platinum label from World Athletics — the highest category — making it an internationally recognised élite race. February weather in Seville is ideal for fast running: cool but not cold, with little rain.
