The Barcelona Marathon route is one of the great draws of the race. It's fast, it's urban and, above all, it's a tour of the best of the city: from the Sagrada Família to the sea, from the Modernista Eixample to the Olympic area of Montjuïc.

Whether you're running it for the first time or reliving the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what its profile looks like and what you'll find in each section.

A course through the most iconic Barcelona

The Barcelona Marathon route is a city tour at race pace. In 42 kilometres it links the city's great symbols: the Sagrada Família, Cerdà's Eixample, the Arc de Triomf, the Mediterranean seafront and the Olympic area. Few marathons in the world pack so much postcard into every kilometre.

The Sagrada Família and the Eixample

One of the most photographed moments of the race comes as you pass the Sagrada Família, with Gaudí's towers rising over the perfect grid of the Eixample. This is Modernista Barcelona seen from inside the race, in kilometres packed with crowds and an atmosphere that pushes you on.

The sea: Barceloneta and the seafront

The second half of the route drops towards the Mediterranean. The course crosses the Born, reaches Barceloneta and runs the seafront and Port Olímpic with the sea on one side. It's the fastest, most open stretch, where the sea breeze carries you through the decisive kilometres.

Start and finish at Plaça d'Espanya

The Barcelona Marathon starts and finishes on Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, at Plaça d'Espanya. Crossing the line with the Venetian Towers, the Montjuïc Magic Fountain and the MNAC as a backdrop is one of the most spectacular finishes on the European calendar.
