The San Silvestre Vallecana is how Madrid sees out the year. 10 km through the centre of the capital, from the Bernabéu to Vallecas, in a running party that mixes international elites, costumes and a whole city cheering on the last night of the year.

Whether you're running it or reliving the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what its profile looks like and what you'll find in each section.

Spain's most famous New Year's Eve race

The San Silvestre Vallecana is much more than a race: it's a tradition. Since 1964, Madrileños and thousands of visitors have seen out the year running 10 km through the centre of the capital. Costumes, a festive atmosphere and crowds filling the pavements make it one of the most special events on the calendar.

Down the Castellana, the heart of Madrid

The route descends the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's great avenue, passing Nuevos Ministerios, Cibeles and Atocha. Running the Castellana at night, lit by Christmas lights with the whole city celebrating, is an experience only the San Silvestre offers.

Finish at the Vallecas stadium

The 10 km finish at the Vallecas stadium, the neighbourhood that gives the race its name and soul. Crossing the line inside the stadium, with the stands cheering in the final hours of the year, is the perfect end to one of the most emotional nights in Spanish running.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the San Silvestre Vallecana route go?

The course starts at Concha Espina, next to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, and descends the Paseo de la Castellana through the centre of Madrid — Nuevos Ministerios, Cibeles, Atocha — to finish at the Vallecas stadium. It's a 10 km route crossing the capital from north to south along its most iconic avenues, packed with crowds on the last night of the year.

What is the San Silvestre Vallecana elevation profile like?

The profile is fast and mostly downhill in the first half, dropping down the Castellana, with a gentle rise towards Vallecas at the end. It's a quick course, designed more to enjoy the New Year's Eve party than to suffer, though the international race is highly competitive.

When is the San Silvestre Vallecana?

Every 31 December in Madrid, since 1964. Over 40,000 runners see out the year in one of Spain's largest and most emotional races, many of them in costume — one of the country's great New Year's Eve traditions.
