Champs-Élysées

The Paris Marathon route is a sightseeing tour of the city's great icons. It starts on the Champs-Élysées, crosses Place de la Concorde, runs through the Bois de Vincennes, follows the banks of the Seine beneath the Eiffel Tower and finishes by the Bois de Boulogne.

Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.

The start on the Champs-Élysées

Few marathons begin so majestically: the Champs-Élysées avenue, the Arc de Triomphe behind you and Place de la Concorde ahead. The opening kilometres drop toward the Bastille, surrounded by the most recognisable Haussmann architecture in Paris.

The Bois de Vincennes

Around the midpoint, the route enters the Bois de Vincennes, the great park in eastern Paris. It's a green breather, with lakes and tree-lined avenues, before the course heads back toward the Seine and the more monumental second half.

The banks of the Seine and the Eiffel Tower

The most spectacular stretch runs beside the Seine, through the right-bank tunnels, past Notre-Dame and beneath the Eiffel Tower. It's the definitive image of the Paris marathon, though the tunnels briefly cut the GPS signal and the noise of the crowd.

The finish by the Bois de Boulogne

The final kilometres skirt the Bois de Boulogne, the great wood in the west, with gentle rolls that bite when the legs are already tired. The finish is on Avenue Foch, a step from the Arc de Triomphe where it all began.
