The London Marathon route is one of the most thrilling in the world. It starts in Greenwich, crosses the Thames over the iconic Tower Bridge at halfway, and finishes on The Mall, the grand avenue in front of Buckingham Palace, with hundreds of thousands of spectators cheering.

Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.

The start in Greenwich and the Cutty Sark

The race begins in Blackheath, next to Greenwich, home of the prime meridian. The opening kilometres pass the Cutty Sark, the famous 19th-century clipper, as the three start lines merge into a river of runners heading for central London.

The Tower Bridge crossing

The highlight comes around the halfway mark: crossing Tower Bridge over the Thames, its Gothic towers and the Tower of London behind. It's the most photographed point of the race and one of the most emotional in world running, with the roar of the crowd greeting runners on the far bank.

Canary Wharf and the Docklands

The second half heads into the Docklands and the Canary Wharf financial district, among glass skyscrapers and narrow streets that amplify the crowd noise. This is where the wall appears: the course is flat, but the legs are heavy and the energy of the crowd becomes essential.

The finish on The Mall

The final kilometres follow the Thames along the Embankment, pass Big Ben and Parliament, and turn down Birdcage Walk to The Mall. Crossing the line on that red avenue, Buckingham Palace to one side, is one of the most iconic finishes there is.
