The New York Marathon isn't a race, it's a parade with a finish line. 42 km across the five boroughs, with two million people on the streets and a finish in Central Park that feels like the whole city is yours.

Whether you're running it or reliving the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what its profile looks like and what you'll find in each section.

Five boroughs, one course

The New York Marathon is the only one to cross all five boroughs of the city in a single day. From Staten Island to Brooklyn, from Queens to the Bronx and back to Manhattan, the route is a journey through all of New York's diversity, each neighbourhood bringing its own atmosphere and its own soundtrack.

The bridges that define the race

If the New York route has a signature, it's its bridges. The Verrazzano-Narrows at the start, with views over the bay; the Queensboro Bridge in silence before the explosion of First Avenue; and the Madison Avenue Bridge into the Bronx. Each bridge is a turning point in the race.

Finish in Central Park

The final miles enter Central Park down Fifth Avenue and wind through the trees to the finish, by Tavern on the Green. Crossing the line in Central Park, after running through the entire city, is one of the most emotional finishes in world running.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the New York Marathon route go?

The course crosses all five boroughs. It starts on Staten Island over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, runs through Brooklyn for almost half the race, crosses Queens and the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan on First Avenue. It climbs into the Bronx, returns to Manhattan down Fifth Avenue and finishes inside Central Park. 42 km of New York from end to end.

What is the New York Marathon elevation profile like?

The profile is rolling because of its bridges. The big ups and downs come at the Verrazzano, the Queensboro and the Madison Avenue Bridge, plus the closing rises towards and inside Central Park. It's not a fast course: it's demanding, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it.

When is the New York Marathon?

The first Sunday of November. It's the biggest marathon in the world, with over 50,000 finishers and around two million spectators on the streets, organised by New York Road Runners since 1970.
