The Madrid Half Marathon is one of the great winter running events in the capital. It is not the fastest — Madrid has elevation — but it is one of the most scenic: it passes the Castellana, Cibeles, Retiro, Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol in just 21 kilometres.

Whether you are running it or want to relive the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what the elevation looks like and what you will find in each section.

The Castellana and monumental Madrid

The Madrid Half Marathon runs along the great Castellana axis and passes some of the most recognisable monuments in Spain: the Cibeles fountain, the Puerta de Alcalá and the edges of Retiro Park. It condenses postcard Madrid into just over twenty kilometres.

Gran Vía, Sol and the centre at street level

The course enters the historic centre via Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol, the kilometre zero of Spain. These are the kilometres with the loudest crowds, where the noise of Madrileños cheering becomes a push through the tougher uphill stretches.

A half with character, not a record course

Unlike the flat halves built for speed, Madrid has elevation and personality. Its inclines and atmosphere make it a race to enjoy the city, not just watch the clock. Finishing it means carrying the heart of Madrid in your legs.
