The Behobia-San Sebastián is the most legendary road race in the Basque Country. 20 km from the French border to the heart of Donostia, with the Gaintxurizketa climb in the middle and Basque crowds filling every town along the route.

Whether you're running it or reliving the course you already ran, this guide explains where it goes, what its profile looks like and what you'll find in each section.

20 km from France to Donostia

The Behobia-San Sebastián is one of the most loved races in Spain. Point-to-point, it starts right on the French border and finishes in the heart of Donostia after 20 km of Gipuzkoan landscape. Basque crowds fill every metre of the route, turning the race into a running party from town to town.

The Gaintxurizketa climb, the legendary hill

If anything defines the Behobia, it's its climb. The Alto de Gaintxurizketa, around the midpoint, is the hill every behobiero knows and fears. Cresting it is the key moment: from there, the descent towards Donostia is enjoyed with the finish getting ever closer.

Finish on the Boulevard, by La Concha

The 20 km finish on the Boulevard of San Sebastián, a step from the Old Town and the bay of La Concha, one of the most beautiful in the world. Crossing the line in Donostia, with the Cantabrian Sea beside you and the crowd on its feet, is the reward for one of the most storied races on the calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Behobia-San Sebastián route go?

The course starts in Behobia, on the French border (Irún), and runs through Ventas de Irún before tackling the Alto de Gaintxurizketa, the race's big climb. It then descends through Oiartzun and Errenteria, skirts the bay of Pasaia and enters Donostia-San Sebastián via Intxaurrondo, to finish on the Boulevard next to the Old Town. 20 km of Atlantic landscape from end to end.

What is the Behobia-San Sebastián elevation profile like?

It's the course with the most character on the calendar: after a gentle opening, the Alto de Gaintxurizketa arrives — a demanding climb around km 7-9 that defines the race. From there the route is mostly downhill and fast towards Donostia. It's not a flat course: it's a classic with a hill, and that's part of its legend.

When is the Behobia-San Sebastián?

The second Sunday of November. Run since 1960, it's the largest and most iconic road race in the Basque Country, with over 30,000 runners and one of the hardest bib waiting lists in all of Spain.
