The Amsterdam Marathon route is one of the fastest in the world. It starts and finishes in the historic 1928 Olympic Stadium, runs through the Vondelpark and the central canals, and traces a long stretch beside the river Amstel before returning to the track.

Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.

Start in the 1928 Olympic Stadium

Few marathons begin inside an Olympic stadium. The race starts on the track of the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium, host of the 1928 Games, and returns to it for the finish. Crossing the line on that track, the stands rising on both sides, is one of the most special finishes on the calendar.

The Vondelpark and the Rijksmuseum

The opening kilometres pass through the Vondelpark, the city's most famous park, and past the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. This is the most cultural, elegant Amsterdam, its canals and narrow leaning houses peeking through the trees.

The long stretch beside the Amstel

The central section follows the river Amstel south to the village of Ouderkerk and returns along the far bank. It's a very long, straight, completely flat stretch — fast but mentally demanding, where the polder wind can be the only obstacle.

The return to the finish

After the Amstel, the course heads back toward the city through the Rivierenbuurt and lines up the final kilometres toward the Olympic Stadium once more. The flat layout lets you hold your pace to the end, which makes Amsterdam one of the great marathons for a personal best.
