The San Sebastián Marathon has been held every November since 1985, turning Donostia's most iconic scenery into a 42-kilometre race course. The route hugs the La Concha bay — one of the most beautiful urban bays in the world, often compared to Rio's — continues along the Paseo Nuevo with the open Cantabrian Sea on one side, crosses the Antiguo neighbourhood, follows the Urumea river downstream and threads through the medieval streets of La Parte Vieja before reaching the finish line. Every kilometre is an autumn postcard of the Basque Country.
With around 6,000 participants, the San Sebastián Marathon is one of the most intimate races on the international calendar — none of the overwhelming scale of the major marathons, but all the emotion of a Basque crowd out in the streets.
