The Frankfurt Marathon route is fast and flat, ideal for a personal best. It runs through the city's financial centre beneath its skyscrapers, crosses the river Main into the historic Sachsenhausen district and finishes with one of the most spectacular endings in the world: a red carpet inside the Festhalle.

Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.

A fast course beneath the skyscrapers

Frankfurt is the only German city with a true skyscraper skyline, and the marathon makes the most of it. The course is flat and fast, running much of its distance among the glass towers of the banking district, giving the race a very different feel from other European marathons.

The river Main and Sachsenhausen

The route crosses the river Main into Sachsenhausen, the historic district of apple-wine taverns. The riverside walks, known as the Museumsufer for their museums, offer some of the most pleasant kilometres of the course.

The residential west of the city

The central part of the race heads into the quieter residential neighbourhoods of western Frankfurt, where the crowds cheer on every corner. This is where you manage your effort before taking on the spectacular finish back in the centre.

The Festhalle red-carpet finish

The end of the Frankfurt Marathon is legendary: runners enter the Festhalle, a great indoor arena, and run the final metres on a red carpet amid lights, music and the roar of the crowd. It's one of the most theatrical, thrilling finishes on the world calendar.
