The Elvas-Badajoz Half Marathon route is unique: it starts in Portugal and finishes in Spain. It sets off from the fortified, UNESCO-listed city of Elvas, crosses the Spanish-Portuguese border and finishes in central Badajoz — one of the very few international road races on the Iberian Peninsula.
Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.
The race begins in Elvas, one of the best-preserved fortress towns in Europe, its bastioned walls listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The opening kilometres run in view of the imposing Amoreira Aqueduct, one of the great feats of 16th-century Portuguese engineering.
The defining moment of the route is the border crossing: runners pass from Portugal into Spain over the old frontier, by the river Caia. Few races let you change country mid-race, which makes this half marathon a very special experience.
Now in Spain, the course heads for Badajoz, the provincial capital, and enters the city across the river Guadiana. The historic Puerta de Palmas and the Plaza Alta welcome runners in the final kilometres, with the Badajoz crowds cheering to the finish.
The course is mostly flat, with a few gentle rolls between Elvas and Badajoz. The short distance between the two cities makes this a comfortable, very enjoyable half marathon, ideal for experiencing the union of two sister cities on either side of the border.
