The Dublin Marathon route is an urban course that pairs the city's great parks with its elegant Georgian squares. It leaves the centre, sweeps through the vast Phoenix Park, and draws a big loop around the southern suburbs before returning to the finish.

Whether you're running it for the first time or want to relive the course you already conquered, this guide walks you through where it goes, what its profile is like and what you'll find in each section.

Phoenix Park, the great green lung

A few kilometres after the start, the route enters Phoenix Park, one of the largest enclosed urban parks in Europe. Its tree-lined avenues and deer-grazed meadows give you the calmest, fastest opening kilometres of the race, before the course turns more urban.

A rolling course, not a flat one

Although Dublin has no hard climbs, its profile is clearly rolling: a succession of gentle rises that add up in the legs over the second half. The toughest stretch comes between kilometres 30 and 35, in the southern suburbs, just as fatigue bites.

Georgian Dublin and the warmth of the crowds

The route runs through the Georgian neighbourhoods of the south side — Terenure, Donnybrook, Ballsbridge — with their rows of brick houses and famous coloured doors. This is where the Irish crowds turn the race into a party: there's a reason they call it 'the friendly marathon'.

The finish at Merrion Square

The final kilometres return to Dublin's Georgian heart to finish by Merrion Square, one of the city's most beautiful squares, a step from Trinity College and Oscar Wilde's house. An elegant finish to one of the most atmospheric marathons in Europe.
